It’s been quite a year. 2013 started with my annual month-long trip to California, where I visited with my family and friends in what I will always think of as my home state despite having lived in New York City almost thirty years. It was on that fateful journey my friend Josie Brown gave me a much-needed kick in the behind regarding my career & strongly suggested I get more active with social media. Thus began an entirely different journey from the one I’d thought I was taking.
Instead of bitching about “having” to do Twitter, I embraced it, open to its possibilities without (or at least trying not to) pre-judge. As a result, I connected with a fabulous group of authors and we became the wild and wacky Twitter ladies. This led to a face-to-face meeting in May when everyone was in town for Book Expo. We did a book event, BookBuzz New York, organized by Francine La Sala (whom I’ve known for years), Samantha Stroh Bailey & Meredith Schorr. Following this was a dinner at my home where we drank champagne, laughed, told stories, drank some more champagne, and formed the foundation of a life-long bond. We’ve since come to share with one another the daily ins and outs, ups and days, tears and laughter, frustrations and triumphs of our lives. We’ve been through the trials and tribulations of a bed bug infestation (mine), kid meltdowns, sicknesses, family trips, a flooded basement (Sam) and dating forays of our Sex(y) in the City single gal (Meredith). We support one another as authors with tweets and posts and sometimes just virtual hand-holding after a bad day or bad review. And what would I do without my fellow early bird Jen Tucker to wish me good morning and “share” a pot of tea with me?
Now here I am at the start of a new year with a brand-new bunch of author buddies whom I feel as though I’ve known all my life. As I head for California for my annual sojourn at the beach, I do so with an even gladder heart than in the past knowing my buddies will be joining me for one of the weekends I’m there. What a difference a year makes. I took a leap of faith and it paid off in spades. P.S. I will post photos of what promises to be an epic weekend with my next post.
