They stand huddled in packs on the sidewalk outside. Curiously showing no signs of impatience. Even if the wait is an hour or more. Nothing will deter these pilgrims from worshipping at the shrine of ramen! Hey, we’re talking noodle soup here…but, to the true believers, some of the best ramen in NYC. Totto Ramen opened up just down the block from us, on West 52nd St., about a year ago. One food blogger described it as, “any smaller and it would be a food truck.” To say it’s a hole in the wall is being generous. But everyone agrees the ramen is to die for. Plus, it’s cheap–for ten bucks you get a meal that fills you up for the entire day. When it first opened, I was excited that it was less than a 5-minute walk away. Now, whenever I walk past it and see the crowd on the sidewalk, I think it might as well be in Tokyo. Sigh. One of these days, I think, I’ll beat the crowds. I’ll get there early…or late, after everyone else has gone their merry way. Trouble is, they’re ALWAYS there. Story of my life…you find something you like, guaranteed it won’t last or there’s a catch.
