I don’t know about you, but 2021 kind of sneaked up on me. I live in a 29th floor condo in New York City that looks out over the Times Square area to the east. In previous years, the view from my window on New Year’s Eve was of barricaded streets and police presence. Revelers arrived early to snag a prime viewing spot in Times Square. The mailboxes on the avenues were locked shut (to prevent any explosive materials from being slipped into them.) This year, the streets were empty and the ball-drop in Times Square was a virtual event, with news coverage but no crowds. I didn’t miss being woken at midnight by car horns honking in the streets below, but I gotta say, it was kind of eerie. But, hey, we survived 2020, which was reason alone to celebrate.
You’ll be happy to know Bones and Roses is set in a pre-pandemic era. The fictional setting was inspired by the real-life Santa Cruz, California, where I lived for 10 years before moving to New York City, and where many of my family members reside. My heroine, of Tish Ballard, property manager extraordinaire, is as clever at sleuthing as she is at slaying dust bunnies and catering to her high-end clientele, as she discovers in Book One. I had such fun cooking up plots and creating characters inspired by my own life experiences. I’ve led a storied life, what can I tell you.
I wish you a happy New Year, filled with more glad tidings than bad news…and books, of course. If we learned nothing else from the trials of 2020, it’s that escapist entertainment, whether it’s a novel or streaming TV, is essential to our well-being.
Now, more than ever, we need books.
