A month alone with just myself? Many of my friends think I’m nuts to go alone off into the wilds for extended periods of time. Maybe I am, but if this is crazy, wrap it up–I’ll take it. To unplug from my daily existence and hole up in a remote locale with just my laptop and Kindle – bliss. It’s like a pulling cork and letting my creativity flow. I got so much done these past weeks staying at my friend Jon’s house in Wood Lake, Wisconsin. Almost an entire book written in the time it took me to write the first three chapters back home! Of course I didn’t have this luxury when my kids were little, but now that they’re grown – it’s my turn to do as I please. Luckily I have a husband for whom this is his busiest season (when he misses me less!) and who is wonderfully understanding as well as entirely capable of fending for himself (and keeping my orchids alive!)
Every morning I would wake while it was still dark out, make myself a cup of tea, get cracking, and watch the sun come up. Never the same sunrise or sunset – each day brought new beauty and new landscapes. I watched Indian summer fade into fall, and now the nip of winter’s in the air. I’m writing this on my last morning here in Wood Lake, with a heart full of gratitude for the bounty I’ve received.
